The Orthocoil mattress is built around a 12.5 gauge spring unit. The gauge refers to the thickness of the spring wire, and a lower number means thicker wire, which is why this construction gives a firmer, more supportive surface than a lighter spring unit. Above the springs sit multi-density spring insulator pads, which stop the coils being felt through the fillings and spread weight more evenly across the surface.

The mattress is deep hand tufted. Tufting draws the layers together and holds the fillings in position, so the mattress keeps a consistent, even surface instead of developing soft spots where it is used most.
